Surface Area celebrating 135 years of British Deaf Association History

We were pleased to attend the British Deaf Association two day conference in Leeds and join the celebrations at the 135th anniversary gala. It was an inspiring space to connect with others championing Deaf history, culture, and representation. We came away with a deeper understanding of the past, present, and future of British Sign Language (BSL) and Deaf culture. As the BDA powerfully put it: Us. Here. Now. Always.

Throughout the conference, we explored the roots and development of BSL — its origins and the people who fought tirelessly for the rights of Deaf communities. We learned about the impact of AI-driven language technologies on Deaf communication, and how systemic failures continue to cause language deprivation for Deaf children. We heard about the vital importance of bilingualism in education and the value of signing spaces — how they are formed, why they matter, and how we can sustain them.

We also traced the legacy of key figures who have shaped modern BSL and reflected on how we can continue to embed Deaf heritage into the future. Finally, we joined an open and honest conversation about the hopes and fears for the next generation of Deaf people.

We left with one key question: how can Surface Area continue these conversations and embed them in our advocacy — supporting Deaf arts, championing Deaf leadership, and amplifying Deaf identities through culture and creativity?

We returned to our desks feeling energised, challenged, and full of ideas, having connected with like-minded organisations and individuals who are also pushing for a more Deaf-led and Deaf-presented creative future.
