Signs Alive Festival 2026
Relive the energy, creativity and community of Signs Alive Festival 2026 — a vibrant, family-friendly celebration of Deaf and disabled artists, held at Sheepfolds Stables, Sunderland, on 27–28 June 2026.
Led by Deaf artist and Festival Director Paul Miller, Signs Alive Festival brought together live performances, workshops, artist talks and immersive virtual reality experiences, creating a welcoming space where Deaf, disabled and hearing communities came together through creativity. The festival was built on the belief that Deaf and disabled artists should be seen not only on stage, but as leaders, educators and role models, championing accessibility, representation and inclusion throughout every aspect of the event.
Produced by Surface Area Dance Theatre in partnership with Rory Studio CIC, and supported by Arts Council England through National Lottery funding, the festival showcased 10 Deaf and disabled artists, delivered 29 workshops, presented 9 performances, and welcomed 137 visitors, while reaching over 67,000 people online through its growing digital presence.
More than a weekend of events, Signs Alive Festival demonstrated the power of accessible arts to inspire confidence, strengthen communities and create meaningful opportunities for artists and audiences alike. Visitors described the festival as welcoming, accessible, vibrant, empowering and inspiring, celebrating the opportunity to experience high-quality Deaf-led work in an inclusive environment.
The festival has already established a lasting legacy by raising the profile of British Sign Language, creating new opportunities for Deaf and disabled artists, and laying the foundations for future editions of Signs Alive. It continues its mission to combat isolation, celebrate Deaf culture, champion Deaf role models and inspire the next generation through year-round engagement and future festivals.
