Congratulations to Surface Area Dance Theatre’s Trustee, Dr Fusako Inami, on their Fulbright All Disciplines Scholar Award from the University of California, Berkeley. 

Fusako’s Fulbright project, “Gestural Writing: Performance, Topography, Trace,” focuses on the ephemeral nature of performance. The project explores ways to preserve live performances that are not recorded but only exist in the form of reviews, scores, pictures, or digitised archives. Fusako’s work involves gathering traces of transcultural movements, contacts, and dancers’ memoirs. This project is based in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at UC Berkeley and aims to develop new methods for reconstructing past performances.
